The route is a true ode to the beautiful. A real classic and a course for epicures at the same time, conducting you through Germany, Switzerland and France. Scenic wine-growing regions in Alsace are a feast for the eyes and the palate alike, as there are of course plenty of fine wines to drink here. Romantic shores, historic castles and cities, the idyll of the Black Forest – take it from us that even the familiar looks quite different from the river. The highpoint of this trip is surely Basle – the city of culture. The 40 museums here certainly give you plenty of choices.

Day 1: Cologne (Embarkation)

Arrive into Cologne and board your Arosa river cruiser during the afternoon. The ship is scheduled to set sail from Cologne at 5:00 pm and you can enjoy your first dinner on board as the ship heads south along the Rhine.

Day 2: Boppard - Middle Rhine Valley

Your first port of call is Boppard, situated close to the narrow horseshoe bend of the Rhine. You can disembark here for a stroll around the pretty riveside town before your cruise continues through the Middle Rhine Valley. Learn about the legends that surround the Loreley Rock, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and enjoy the views of numerous castle ruins, dotted high on hillsides above the river.

Day 3: Strasbourg (Kehl)

The ship will dock in Strasbourg at lunchtime and you have the afternoon free to explore the unique capital of Alsace. Today's optional tour will introduce you to the city which so wonderfully combines the cultures of France and Germany. Strasbourg's Cathedral is one of the most beautiful buildings in eastern France, whilst the Old Town – known as 'Petit France', is a true gem.

Day 4: Basel

Basel is known as the cultural capital of Switzerland and today you can stroll downtown to discover a variety of museums and galleries. Alternatively join an optional tour which includes a panoramic tour by coach and a walk through the oldest part of the city. You may also wish to take advantage of an optional trip to Lucerne, one of the prettiest Swiss lakeside towns.

Day 5: Breisach - Strasbourg (Kehl)

This morning's port of call is the small wine-producing town of Breisach. The half day optional tour here will take you to St. Stephan's church which is home to a beautiful altar by Hans Loi and wall - paintings by Martin Schongauer. Re-board the ship at lunchtime to continue your journey to Strasbourg.

Day 6: Strasbourg (Kehl)

The ship will remain docked in Kehl until the evening so you have a full day to explore the city of Strasbourg. Alternatively, you may wish to join an optional excursion through Germany's Black Forest to the fascinating spa town of Baden Baden.

Day 7: Mainz - Koblenz

This morning the ship docks at Mainz, one of Germany's most historic cities. Today's optional walking tour of the city will introduce you to some of the highlights such as St Stephen's Church, with its windows by Chagall, St Martin's Cathedral and the university, originally built as a Jesuit college between 1615 and 1618. In the afternoon, the ship makes her way back through the Middle Rhine Valley, arriving in Koblenz in the early evening.

Day 8: Cologne (Disembarkation)

Your Southern Rhine Cruise comes to an end this morning as you disembark in Cologne after breakfast.
